I'm an attorney turned product manager with over ten years of professional experience and six years of that in product management.
In my six years as an individual contributor in product management, I've been really proud of the track record of success in terms of shipping valuable in high impact features - working really closely with engineering teams and squads and building great team culture. The thing I wanted to explore with a coach was how to more successfully make the transition from an individual contributor role to a management role with greater leverage, greater impact and the ability to meet my professional aspirations.
Coaching is one of those things where not any coach can help meet a person's professional needs. There are two important criteria to fit on, which makes it kind of difficult. The first is around personality and communication style. The second is around ensuring that the coach has the right set of experiences and knowledge within the industry to really make sure that they provide confidence that the advice being given is something that'll be worthwhile and help meet the person's professional goals. I had actually consulted with another kind of product coach who didn't meet on both criteria. Having the opportunity to talk with Andre in the consultation session was definitely helpful in terms of providing good confidence around fit for both of those factors.
Andre was great. He's very thoughtful and measured. One of the communication styles that I prefer ... is making sure that the coach is taking the time to digest what I'm saying and then producing a thoughtful response. Andre was definitely thoughtful and measured in his response. I also really appreciated that he was clearly taking a lot of notes and really making sure that we would circle back and address points that he was identifying as points of need. Not only circling back but being thoughtful about ensuring that each of those points had some kind of clear tactical action associated with it so that I would be walking away from the conversation not only identifying the points of concern but having some valuable takeaways from it. It was good.
I appreciated the concrete, tactical advice that felt really relevant and felt like it was tailored to the specific needs that I was voicing.
I would tell my friends that the service from PeopleStorming (and Andre, specifically) was really great for me in terms of having someone who was experienced and methodical about coaching. Someone who really had a lot of industry knowledge and whose resume included working at some pretty high profile technology companies. That also really gave me the confidence that the information would be useful and the advice would be useful in terms of advancing my career in technology. If you're looking for a really mature coach that specifically has expertise within the technology domain, I would definitely recommend Andre and PeopleStorming.
